Engelbert Humperdinck werd als Arnold Dorsey (1936) geboren in India, maar het gezin, inclusief negen broers en zusters, emigreerde in 1946 naar Leicester in Groot-Brittannië.
Hij nam op zeker moment de naam Engelbert Humperdinck aan, wat hem later nog op een proces kwam te staan, tegen hem aangespannen door de erfgenamen van de bekende Duitse componist Engelbert Humperdinck. Er is totaal geen verwantschap tussen hen.
In 1966, nog voor zijn grote succesperiode, trad hij regelmatig in België op, vooral in Knokke en Mechelen. In Zeebrugge werd een videoclip opgenomen. België was de wieg van Humperdincks succes.
Begin juni 2007 stond hij in Nederland samen met de Toppers & topdansers Remco Bastiaansen & Charissa van Dipte zes keer in de Amsterdam ArenA.
In maart 2012 kondigde de BBC Humperdinck aan als de Britse inzending voor het Eurovisiesongfestival 2012. Daar heeft hij Groot-Brittannië vertegenwoordigd met het nummer “Love Will Set You Free”, geschreven door Martin Terefe en Sacha Skarbek.
